What’s Causing Your Foot Pain?Understanding Tendonitis and Nerve Entrapment.

Foot pain can disrupt your daily life, making even the simplest tasks difficult. Two common conditions at the root of foot pain are tendonitis and nerve entrapment. Understanding their causes, symptoms, and solutions can help you take steps toward relief.

Tendonitis in the foot.

What is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis occurs when the tendons—thick bands that connect muscles to bones—become inflamed due to overuse, strain, or poor foot mechanics. In the foot, Achilles tendonitis is especially common, causing pain at the back of the heel or ankle.

Key Causes:

  • Overuse from repetitive activities like running or jumping

  • Improper footwear that lacks support

  • Poor biomechanics, such as flat feet or high arches

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • Dull or sharp pain along the tendon

  • Swelling or tenderness

  • Pain that worsens with physical activity

Solutions:

  • Rest and avoid overuse of the affected area

  • Ice to reduce inflammation

  • Supportive footwear or custom orthotics to relieve strain

  • Gentle stretching exercises to promote healing

What is Nerve Entrapment?

Nerve entrapment happens when nerves in the foot become compressed, irritated, or pinched. This is often due to tight footwear, overuse, or swelling caused by injury or inflammation. Nerve entrapment on the top of the foot is particularly common and can lead to discomfort that worsens with movement.

Key Causes:

  1. Tight or poorly fitting shoes that compress superficial nerves

  2. Repetitive strain, such as walking or running on hard surfaces

  3. Swelling from injury, arthritis, or other medical conditions

  4. Structural issues like high arches or bone spurs

  5. Tendon inflammation

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • Tingling, burning, or numbness in the foot

  • Sharp, shooting pain when walking or wearing shoes

  • “Pins and needles” sensations, especially on the top of the foot

Solutions:

  • Wear well-fitted, supportive footwear with room in the toe box

  • Use custom orthotics to reduce nerve pressure

  • Rest, ice, and elevate the foot to minimize inflammation

  • Seek professional care for persistent symptoms, which may include therapy or targeted treatments
